Ukraine halts sugar exports until mid-Sept

MOSCOW. May 31 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian government on Tuesday imposed a zero export quota on sugar exports until the middle of September, Ukrainian media reported, citing the Cabinet's representative to parliament, Taras Melnichuk.

Changes were made to appendixes one and five of cabinet resolution No. 1466, dated December 27, 2022, on the approval of lists of goods subject to export and import licensing and quotas in 2023, he said on his Telegram channel.

Sugar (Ukrainian customs commodity classification code 1701) was included in appendix one on the "amounts of quotas for goods subject to export licensing" with a quota of zero tonnes and licensing period from June 5 to September 15, 2023, and the corresponding position of sugar was excluded from appendix five on the "list of goods subject to export licensing," Melnichuk said.

Ukraine's Agrarian Policy Ministry said in the middle of last year that the country was expected to produce about 1.08 million tonnes of sugar in the 2022-2023 agricultural year (September-August), 25% less than a year earlier, while domestic demand was estimated at 1.2 million tonnes per year.
