IAEA head urges Ukraine, Russia to honor principles of Zaporozhye NPP security

NEW YORK, UN. May 31 (Interfax) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi urged Ukraine and Russia on Tuesday to honor the principles of security of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, in particular, to abstain from hostilities near it.

While addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council, Grossi asked its members to support those principles explicitly.

Grossi highlighted several such principles that, inter alia, there should be no attacks from or at the facility, especially those targeting reactors, spent fuel storage sites, or other critical infrastructure or workers, and that the power plant should not be used as warehouse for heavy weapons.

He also called for ensuring the security of external sources of energy supply and access to them, as well as protecting the structures, systems, components necessary for safe operation of the Zaporozhye NPP from attacks and sabotage.

Any actions, which undermine such principles, should not be allowed to happen, Grossi said.
