Ukrainian Railways to finalize designing of standard-gauge railway from Polish border to Lvov by end of 2023

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Ukraine's Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways, or UZ) state railway company is expected to finalize the designing of a standard-gauge (1,435-mm-wide, also known as European gauge) railway from the border with Poland to Lvov (the Mostiska-Sknilov section) by the end of 2023 to streamline railway services between Ukraine and other European countries, UZ Board Chairman Yevgeny Lyashchenko told Ukrainian journalists.

"We're planning to finalize the drafting of design documents for building a 1,435-mm European gauge track from the border with Poland to Lvov, particularly the Mostiska-Sknilov section. We have a feasibility study now. We plan to finalize the construction design in 2023," Lyashchenko said.

A new European-gauge railway will link Lvov with Krakow, Prague, and Vienna, he said.

As reported earlier, Ukraine planned to start the construction of a European-gauge railway between Mostiska and Sknilov back in 2020. The government also decided in 2020 to add the project to a list of priority investment projects for the period up to 2023.

The Sknilov railway station is located in the western part of Lvov 5.5 kilometers away from the city's main rail terminal, three kilometers away from its airport, and one kilometer away from its bus station.
