Mexico wants to develop its wine exports to Russia

ABRAU-DURSO. May 12 (Interfax) - Mexico is interested in increasing wine exports to Russia, Mexican Ambassador to Russia Eduardo Villegas Megias said.

"We produce only 36 million liters of wine a year, which is not much, but we also consume very little. Of this volume, 5% is exported and we can increase this figure," the ambassador said during the Wine Tourism Forum, which takes place on Friday at Abrau-Durso.

More than 400 wineries operate in Mexico, he said. The United States accounts for the largest volume of exports.

"There is great potential to export wine to the Russian Federation, and winemakers are ready to explore this market, and to cooperate with Russian wineries," the diplomat said.

Speaking about the supply of Russian wine to Mexico, the ambassador said that his country is barely familiar with the products of Russian wineries.

"We don't know Russian wine, so I think we can introduce sparkling wine in Mexico," Megias said.

At the same time, there are distributors in Mexico who want to supply Russian wine to the Mexican market, the ambassador said.
