European Parliament approves additional 145 million euros in macro-financial assistance for Moldova on certain political conditions

BRUSSELS. May 9 (Interfax) - Members of the European Parliament voted on Tuesday for an additional 145 million euros in macro-financial assistance to Moldova in order to help the country meet its financial needs in 2023.

The European Parliament has upheld the European Commission's proposal to support the Moldovan government in its efforts to stabilize the economic situation in the country. As many as 561 MEPs voted for the proposal, with 43 votes against and 20 abstentions, the press service for the EU legislative body said in a communique.

The financial assistance, totaling 45 million euros in grants and up to 100 million euros in loans, will be provided in two tranches in the third and fourth quarters of 2023, provided that Chisinau has met "certain political conditions," according to the document.

"These include justice system reforms, ensuring the rule of law and the fight against corruption, and good progress in implementing an International Monetary Fund macroeconomic program," the European Parliament's document says.
