Rosatom starts building third unit of El Dabaa NPP in Egypt

MOSCOW. May 3 (Interfax) - The Rosatom state corporation has poured the first concrete for the third generating unit of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt, Rosatom's engineering division Atomstroyexport said.

Construction has entered the "main phase," it said.

"The start of construction of the third power unit of the El-Dabaa NPP signifies that the project is gaining momentum. Last year, work was launched at the first and second power units," said Atomstroyexport Senior Vice President Alexander Korchagin.

Rosatom received permission from the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority to build the third unit at El Dabaa at the end of March.

Russia and Egypt signed an intergovernmental agreement on the NPP in November 2015. The EPC contract was signed on December 31, 2016. The plant will have four 1,200 MW units with VVER-1200 reactors

All four of the NPP's power units should be built by 2028-2029.
