Ex-Kazakh security chief Masimov sentenced to 18 years in prison

ASTANA. April 24 (Interfax) - The Astana Special Inter-District Criminal Court has convicted former Kazakh National Security Committee Chairman Karim Masimov and his deputies in a case dealing with the January 2022 riots, the court's press service said on Monday.

"The final judgment is 18 years in prison, combined with the confiscation of property and a ban on occupying government offices for life," it said.

Masimov was charged with high treason, an attempt to violently seize power in Kazakhstan, and abuse of office.
