IAEA's Grossi worried by shelling near Zaporozhye NPP

BRUSSELS. April 21 (Interfax) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Friday he was worried about detonations and shelling near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

"Our experts at the site have frequently reported about hearing detonations, at times suggesting intense shelling not far from the site. I'm deeply concerned about the situation at the plant," the IAEA quoted Grossi as saying.

Grossi said he was continuing to make efforts to ensure the ZNPP's safety and security and negotiate with Ukraine and Russia.

Russia's Rosatom state atomic energy corporation that it conducted consultations with an IAEA delegation to address the situation at the ZNPP. The meeting participants discussed Grossi's initiative on guaranteeing the plant's nuclear and physical nuclear safety and security.

The ZNPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which operates six VVER-1000 power units.
