Mir cards may be used for payments in Cuba in coming months - Russian National Payment Card System head
MOSCOW. April 13 (Interfax) - Mir cards may be used to pay for goods and services in Cuba in the coming months, General Director of the Russian National Payment Card System Vladimir Komlev said.
"We are continuing to work with the countries that are ready to interact with us. It was reported recently that a network of ATMs was installed in Cuba. Hopefully, a network of POS terminals will start full-scale operation in Cuba in the coming months," Komlev said at a conference of the Russian Bank Association.
The start of Mir card's acceptance by ATMs in Cuba was reported in March. The National Payment Card System said it continued working on the broader acceptance of Mir cards in Cuba.
The Russian government established the National Payment Card System in 2014 following the imposition of sanctions. The issuance of Mir cards was announced in December 2015. A total of 192 million Mir cards were issued as of March 1, 2023.
