Ukrainian Orthodox Church banned in Ukraine's Volyn region

MOSCOW. April 11 (Interfax) - Deputies of the Volyn regional council have unanimously decided to ban the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in the region, Ukrainian media reported on Tuesday.

They also recommended that local authorities terminate the rental agreements for the plots of land which the UOC's churches are located on.

The Volyn region is situated in northwestern Ukraine and its administrative center is the city of Lutsk. The UOC in the region runs the Zimnensky Svyatogorsky Convent and several hundred parishes.

Previously, the UOC's activities were banned by a decision of the authorities in the Khmelnitsky region, and all churches were seized from the canonical church in the Lvov and Ivano-Frankovsk regions.
