Quake near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky produces series of aftershocks
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. April 3 (Interfax) - A powerful earthquake that occurred near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Monday has produced a series of aftershocks, including five heavy tremors, the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service said on its website.
The most significant tremors were magnitude 3.6 to 6.4.
A magnitude 6.9-point earthquake occurred at 3:06 p.m. local time on April 6. The quake's epicenter was located in Avacha Bay, 64 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. There was no danger of tsunamis.
Tremors reached 6 points in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vilyuchinsk and the Elizovo district.
Furniture shook and objects fell to the ground in apartments in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and people ran outdoors.
The territorial health ministry has reported an absence of any casualties.
Rescue teams are examining public buildings and residencies for possible damage. The Emergency Situations Ministry reported an absence of any casualties or destroyed buildings.
"However, we do have information about damaged plasterwork and cracks in a number of buildings," acting head of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's branch in Kamchatka Territory Yury Kartashev told reporters.
