Rosatom receives permission to build unit 3 of El Dabaa NPP in Egypt

MOSCOW. March 30 (Interfax) - The Rosatom state corporation has received permission to build unit 3 of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt, the Strana Rosatom corporate media outlet reported.

The decision was made at a board meeting of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority on March 29. The agency's experts confirmed the safety of unit 3, equipped with a Russian VVER-1200 reactor, during an inspection, it said.

The construction of unit 1 of the El Dabaa NPP started in July 2022, and work on unit 2 began in November 2022.

In November 2015, Russia and Egypt signed an intergovernmental agreement on constructing a NPP. The contract for engineering work, procurement and construction of the El Dabaa NPP was concluded on December 31, 2016. Likhachev and Mohamed Shaker, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, signed the acts for the commercial contracts in Cairo in December 2017, which entered into force for construction of the four-unit El Dabaa NPP.

Construction of all four of the NPP's power units is planned for completion by 2028-2029.
