Kiev to initiate sanctions on Romanian senator over territorial claims on Ukraine - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. March 24 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry will initiate sanctions against Romanian Senator Diana Sosoaca, who has suggested that part of Ukraine's southern territory must belong to Romania, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said.

"By making this step, the fringe politician is seeking to 'restore cultural identity of the Romanian population'. We strongly denounce an attempt to call into question Ukraine's territorial integrity and negate the spirit of neighborliness between Ukraine and Romania," Ukrainian media quoted Nikolenko as saying on his social account.

"The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry will initiate sanctions on Sosoaca as a person posing a national security threat," he said.

Romanian media reported earlier that Sosoaca submitted a bill demanding the severance of the Treaty of Neighborliness and Cooperation between Romania and Ukraine. She insisted that Snake Island and some other territories, which were part of Romania between WWI and WWII and are now part of Ukraine, should become Romanian again.
