Moldovan PM affirms neutrality, need to bolster national defense capacity

CHISINAU. March 2 (Interfax) - Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has reaffirmed the commitment to Moldova's neutrality and the need for bolstering the national defense capacity.

"Moldova is a neutral state by constitution. We agreed to the neutral status while negotiating peace on the Dniestr. We keep peace and security and stay committed to nothing but peaceful principles of the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict. Nothing but dialogue," Recean said in an interview with Romanian television.

According to him, Moldovan society prefers neutrality, and the authorities have to reckon with this wish. "Renouncement of the neutral status is not on the agenda today, however, restrictions of this foreign political document are being discussed. The Republic of Moldova is on its way to bolstering defense capacity. There are neutral countries that heavily invest in their defense capacity while not considering the renouncement of their neutrality," Recean said.
