Ukraine continuing talks with Turkey on use of floating generators

MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - Ukraine and Turkey have agreed to continue negotiations on the use of floating power generators to supply Ukraine with electricity, also giving special attention to their safety and location, Ukrainian media said, citing the website of the Ukrainian Energy Ministry.

"Floating power generators are an opportunity to provide electricity to the region, one of the elements of the decentralization of the energy system," Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galuschenko said at a meeting with Turkish Ambassador in Kiev Yagmur Ahmet Guldere on Wednesday.

The parties also discussed a wide range of issues related to bilateral cooperation, the ministry said.

"The minister thanked for the assistance provided by the Turkish side to the Ukrainian energy sector. In particular, in December 2022, Kharkov and Kherson received 180 generators in the form of humanitarian aid through the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency," it said.

As reported, JSC Energy Company of Ukraine (ECU) state-owned energy trader and Turkey's Karpowership, working together with national and international organizations, plan to develop a project to finance and supply 500 MW of electricity from Turkish generators on ships to Ukraine.

To this end, on January 26, 2023, the companies signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the field of power supply and the use of floating generators to help end the power shortages in Ukraine.

According to ECU, this capacity is sufficient to supply electricity to one million households in Ukraine.

Another option under consideration is to place these shipborne generators off the coast of Moldova and Romania and connect their power lines and current transmitters to the Ukrainian grid via the interstate power transmission lines, ECU said.
