Ukraine almost fully implements European Commission recommendations on media - minister

MOSCOW. Feb 2 (Interfax) - Ukraine has almost fully implemented the European Commission's recommendations concerning the functioning of the country's media industry, Ukraine Culture and Information Policy Minister Alexander Tkachenko said.

"In fact, about 90% of them [have been implemented]. We only have to make amendments to the law On Advertising, and then this recommendation will be fulfilled," Ukrainian media quoted Tkachenko as telling journalists in Kiev on Thursday.

The European Commission has positively assessed the way Ukraine has been implementing these recommendations, he said.

The Ukrainian law On Media is to take effect on March 31, and all the relevant institutions are supposed to prepare the necessary bylaws by this date, he said.

As concerns amendments that have to be made to the law On Advertising, Tkachenko said there are some nuances concerning the amount of ads per hour and their contents.

The minister said he expected all the necessary amendments would be made before the European Commission starts reviewing the implementation of its recommendations by Ukraine in spring.
