NATO pledges to help Moldova receive air defense systems

CHISINAU. Jan 20 (Interfax) - NATO will help Moldova receive air defense systems, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said.

"Moldova is currently under strong pressure, and it needs our support, from the EU and NATO. Moldova is a common partner of NATO and the EU. I think we could offer a lot of interesting things together," Geoana said on Romanian television.

"President Maia Sandu has repeatedly called for enhancing Moldova's air defense systems. I am sure that the allies stand ready to help the Republic of Moldova in its efforts toward receiving air defense systems. NATO allies and EU members will be responsive to Moldova's request for assistance," he said.

Sandu said on Thursday that Chisinau had asked the West to help it acquire air defense systems.
