Ukraine nearly halves iron ore exports, coke and semi-coke down 98% in 2022

MOSCOW. Jan 18 (Interfax) - Ukraine reduced iron ore exports 45.9% in 2022 to 23.985 million tonnes, Ukrainian media reported citing the State Customs Service.

The exports fell 57.8% in value to $2.913 billion.

Iron ore was exported mainly to Slovakia - 19.23% of supplies in value, the Czech Republic - 17.32% and Poland -16.49%.

Imports came to $65,000 and 101 tonnes, compared with $184,000 for 1,202 tonnes in 2021. Imports came from Norway - 36.92%, the Netherlands - 27.69% and the UK - 16.92%.

Conversion pig iron exports fell 59% to 1.325 million tonnes and 61.1% in value to $638.8 million. Deliveries were made mainly to the United States - 38.47% of the total in value, Poland - 32.91% and Turkey - 8.12%.

Ukraine imported 40 million tonnes of pig iron for $23,000, all of it from Germany, down from 185 tonnes for $226,000 a year previously.

Exports of carbon steel semis fell 72% to 1.9 million tonnes and 70.9% to $1.191 billion in 2022. The main exports were to Bulgaria - 26.55%, Poland - 13.97% and Italy - 12.13 %.

Imports of carbon steel semis fell 85.7% to 5,558 tonnes and 86% to $3.634 million. Nearly all the imports - 96.92% - came from Russia in the first months of the year.

Ferroalloy exports fell 47.7% year-on-year to 349,560 tonnes and 46% to $564.136 million. Most exports were to Poland - 53.25%, the Netherlands - 13.13%, and Romania - 5.66%.

Ferroalloy imports fell 65.5% to 20,546 tonnes and 59.1% to $72.705 million. Most imports were from Norway - 22.67%, China - 15.60%, and Kazakhstan - 14.10%.

Ukraine did not export manganese ore or concentrate in 2022.

Imports of manganese ores fell 68% to 135,798 tonnes and 68% to $18.098 million in 2022. Most imports were from Ghana - 99.16%.

Ferrous scrap exports fell 91.3% to 53,557 tonnes and 91.9% to $19.271 million. Exports went to Turkey - 38.97% and Poland - 34.25%.

Scrap imports fell 92.1% to 1,824 tonnes and 92.2% to $3.488 million. Most imports were from Turkey - 78.92%.

Ukraine did not import hot-briquette iron, a pig iron and scrap metal substitute, in 2022 but exported 258 tonnes to India for $48,000.

Ukraine exported 3,856 tonnes of coke and semi-coke for $1.011 million, down 98% and 97.6%, respectively, in 2022, but none at all in December. Exports were to Hungary - 42.63%, Georgia - 37.69% and Turkey - 17.41%.

Ukraine imported 335,691 tonnes of coke and semi-coke for $174.499 million down 54.5% and 50.3%. Imports came from Russia - 43.43%, all in the first two months, and from Poland - 30.07% and the Czech Republic - 13.15%.
