Russian govt proposes terminating CoE treaties with regard to Russia

MOSCOW. Dec 30 (Interfax) - The Russian government has submitted a proposal to the president on terminating the validity of the Council of Europe's international treaties with regard to Russia.

"The proposal on terminating the validity of the Council of Europe's international treaties with regard to Russia shall be approved and submitted to the Russian president for forwarding to the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly," the government said in a resolution published on the official online database of legal information on Friday.

Russia announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe on March 15. After that, the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers adopted a resolution on expelling Russia based on Article 8 of its Statute (a serious violation of the Statute's provisions) and, applying a formal compulsory mechanism, terminated Russia's membership unilaterally.
