110 Russian suppliers secure right to export peas to China - Agroexport

MOSCOW. Dec 29 (Interfax) - One hundred and ten Russian producers and distributors have secured the right to export peas to China, the Agriculture Ministry's Agroexport Center said.

The list includes enterprises in Altai Territory, Kemerovo, Bryansk, Kurgan, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk and Ryazan regions, Buryatia, Krasnodar Territory and Primorye. An additional list of enterprises is now being compiled.

A protocol on phytosanitary requirements for peas exported from Russia to China was signed on October 10, 2022, Agroexport recalled. Under this document, peas intended for consumption in food or processing, not for seed purposes, can be exported. Exports are allowed from all of Russia's territory.

China imported 2.1 million tonnes of dried peas for $755 million in 2021, Agroexport reported, citing ITC Trade Map data. China accounted for almost 27% of global pea imports by value, and its imports of peas have grown by 75% in value since 2017.

"In Russia, meanwhile, pea production is growing steadily thanks to the expansion of planted areas and reached 3.17 million tonnes in 2021. A significant portion of the harvest goes toward exports, by the volume of which Russia has been in second place in the world in recent years," Agroexport said. Russia exported a record 1.2 million tonnes of dried peas for $378 million in 2021. The key markets were Turkey, Bangladesh, Italy and Pakistan.

"We are currently seeing strong growth of demand for peas, including from China, one of the world's main importers of this crop. The opening of the Chinese market offers companies developing trade substantial prospects to expand the geography and volume of shipments," the head of agribusiness at Pokrovsky Group, Stanislav Kashuba was quoted as saying in the press release.
