Rospotrebnadzor not expecting spike in Covid-19 morbidity in Russia

MOSCOW. Dec 21 (Interfax) - Russia is not expecting a spike in Covid-19 morbidity, Natalia Pshenichnaya, deputy director for clinical analysis at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor), said in an interview with Interfax.

"The Covid-19 situation is relatively stable for now. There are 6,000 to 7,000 cases reported daily. Yet, seasonal coronaviruses are historically 'winter' viruses, so Covid-19 may reappear, as well," Pshenichnaya said.

The expert said she was not expecting a spike in morbidity. "The population is well familiar with the virus: some are vaccinated and have received booster shots, while others have contracted the infection several times. Anyway, they are not as vulnerable as they were at the beginning of the pandemic, she said.

A rather high level of Covid-19 herd immunity has formed in Russia, and "we are not observing a significant intensification of the epidemic process," he said.
