Ukraine agrees on cooperation with IEA to rebuild, develop country's energy system

MOSCOW. Dec 15 (Interfax) - International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol and Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko have signed a two-year working program of cooperation to rebuild and develop the Ukrainian energy system.

Ukrainian media reported with reference to the Energy Ministry that the program deals with Ukraine's key short-term and long-term priorities and is focused on energy security, transition to clean energy, energy saving, and the reconstruction of the energy sector.

The IEA will also help the ministry to develop Ukraine's energy strategy for the period until 2050, estimate the current principles of investment in the energy system, and draw up recommendations for the system's enhancement.

"Tightened security and transition to carbon-free energy are fundamental principles on which the recovery of Ukraine's energy sector will be based. We are not dropping our previous plans to develop renewable energy sources and join the global green transition trend. The joint program should help utilize high-quality expertise and widely implement best international practices and advanced technology for rebuilding Ukraine's modern energy system," Galushchenko said.
