Ukrainian Energy Ministry, International Energy Agency sign 2-year program for Ukraine's energy system recovery

MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol and Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko have signed a two-year program for the recovery of Ukraine's electric power industry, the Ukrainian media said with the reference to the Ukrainian Energy Ministry's website on Tuesday.

"The agreement was signed at the IEA Paris headquarters following the meeting between Fatih Birol and German Galushchenko," the ministry said.

The joint working group is focused on key short-term and long-term energy projects of Ukraine with emphasis on energy security, transition to green energy and reconstruction of the energy sector.

Under the program, the IEA will help the Energy Ministry draft an energy strategy for the period until 2050. The program spells out areas of cooperation, including the energy system's security, energy saving, low-carbon hydrogen, renewable energy, biogas, and work with data and statistics.

Seeking to enhance energy security, the IEA will help the Ukrainian government evaluate the existent principles of investment in the energy system and elaborate improvement guidelines.

"Higher security and transition to carbon-free energy are fundamental principles of the recovery of the Ukrainian energy sector. We are not renouncing the earlier plans to develop renewable energy and support the global trend of green transition," Galushchenko said.

The joint work with the International Energy Agency will draw quality expertise and best global practices and will promote the broad implementation of cutting-edge technologies and the recovery of Ukraine's energy system, he said.
