UN under-secretary-general arrives in Ukraine on 4-day visit

MOSCOW. Dec 12 (Interfax) - UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths arrived in Ukraine on December 12 on a four-day visit, the Ukrainian media said with the reference to the press service for the United Nations Office in Ukraine.

The media said that Griffiths would visit Nikolayev, Kherson and Kiev.

"Together with Denise Brown, UN assistant secretary-general and humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, Mr. Griffiths will familiarize himself with the results of humanitarian response and new challenges posed by the increasing infrastructural damage amid low temperatures in winter," the media said.

Meetings with officials, humanitarian partners, and people affected by the conflict will take place during the visit.

While in Nikolayev, Griffiths will visit places of residence of internally displaced persons and a UN-supported bakery that makes bread for people in Kherson. He will later travel to Kherson to see how the United Nations and the local authorities are opening heating stations. Griffiths will end his tour in Kiev with a meeting with senior officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations and diplomats.
