No prerequisites for further CAS sanctions against Russian sports, yet IOC recommendations remain - ROC president

MOSCOW. Dec 7 (Interfax) - The sanctions imposed on Russian sports by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2020 are unlikely to be extended, yet the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) remain, Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) President Stanislav Pozdnyakov said.

"The sanctions imposed by the international arbitral tribunal for sport in 2020 in the wake of the WADA-RUSADA proceeding will expire on December 17. There has been lots of speculation on this matter, but there are no prerequisites for the extension of any restrictions on our national symbols or Russia's representation. The CAS ruling has been fulfilled in this area, and there are no other lawsuits," Pozdnyakov said at a meeting of the ROC Executive Committee on Wednesday.

"The CAS' sanctions will expire. However, the IOC recommendations given in February for political reasons remain and harm the IOC and the entire Olympic movement every day. The suspensions are at odds with the Olympic Charter and every other regulatory document. Our colleagues realize that. This is an unprecedented situation, which requires the immediate lifting of the inhumane restrictions," he said.

The CAS delivered its judgement on the dispute between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), which found RUSADA incompliant with the WADA Code, in December 2020. The court prohibited Russians from demonstrating their flag and national anthem at Olympic Games for two years. In addition, Russia was prohibited from bidding to host World Cups and Olympic Games for two years. Restrictions were imposed on a number of officials.

The IOC recommended in February 2022 that international sport federations bar Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions over the Ukraine situation. Most federations complied with the IOC recommendations.
