Azerbaijan boosts gas imports 1.5-fold in Jan-Sept, over 90% of supplies from Turkmenistan

BAKU. Dec 6 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan imported 680.244 million cubic meters of gas in January-September 2022, up 50.5% year-on-year, the Azerbaijani government told Interfax.

The value of the gas supplied and declared by the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee rose 4.6-fold in January-September to $79.372 million.

Gas supplies from Turkmenistan accounted for 90.3% of overall imports at 614.153 mcm for $76.863 million, while the rest came from Iran at 66.091 mcm for $2.509 million.

Azerbaijan imported gas from Iran only in January-September 2021 at 452.027 mcm for $17.157 million.

Declared imports of gas into the country totaled 510.565 mcm in 2021, up 3.8-fold over 2020, for $19.385 million, up 3.8-fold. Supplies also came only from Iran.

Iran began transporting gas from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan in January 2022 in line with a trilateral swap agreement. It stipulates supplies to Azerbaijan through Iran of up to 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas per year.
