Explosion occurs at Ukrainian embassy to Spain on Nov 30, employee injured

MOSCOW. Dec 1 (Interfax) - An employee of the Ukrainian embassy to Spain was slightly injured in an explosion that occurred as the man was handling a letter earlier delivered to the embassy, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko said on Wednesday.

The injury sustained by the embassy employee is not life-threatening, he said.

"The building supervisor suffered light injuries. He has been hospitalized. All necessary medical care is being provided to him," Ukrainian media outlets quoted Nikolenko as saying in a social media post.

No other embassy staff were injured in the incident, he said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, in turn, has pledged that the organizers and the perpetrators of the terrorist act at the Ukrainian embassy in Spain will be severely punished.

"When the perpetrator of this terrorist act is identified, and we are taking all measures for it, this person or these people will face the most severe punishment," Kuleba said in a video address on social media on Wednesday, according to Ukrainian media outlets.

Kuleba also issued an instruction to immediately increase security measures at all Ukrainian diplomatic missions abroad.

"What happened is very serious. It is an attack on a diplomatic mission, which is protected by international law. The Spanish police are carrying out an investigation. This situation is under our close scrutiny," the minister said.
