Azerbaijani General Staff chief, NATO rep discuss bilateral cooperation

BAKU. Nov 21 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani First Deputy Defense Minister, General Staff Chief Karim Veliyev and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Partnerships Directorate at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Rear-Adm. Gunnstein Bruasdal have discussed prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO at a meeting in Baku.

"The meeting has addressed prospects of further cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO and areas of the joint countering of the existent and possible threats. Veliyev commended the alliance's input in the training of Azerbaijani units within the framework of the NATO Operational Capability Concept," the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.

Veliyev briefed Bruasdal on the work done by the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry on the liberated Azerbaijani territories in the post-war period. He also "noted the development of relations between Azerbaijan and NATO and the active participation of representatives of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in various NATO programs."

For his part, Bruasdal described Azerbaijan as a reliable partner of NATO and lauded its active participation in the anti-terrorism efforts, the work done by Azerbaijani servicemen at the alliance headquarters, and their professionalism demonstrated in international peacekeeping missions.

"A detailed exchange of views on some other issues of mutual interest took place at the meeting," the ministry said.

Bruasdal is visiting Azerbaijan for the NATO Days, which end on November 25, it said.
