Law providing privileges to Kazakh ex-president Nazarbayev, his family to expire by year-end - lawmaker

ASTANA. Nov 9 (Interfax) - The Kazakh law on the First President - Elbasy will expire by the end of this year, Mazhilis member Yerlan Sairov said.

"As we know, any mention of the merits [of First Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev] was removed from the text of the Kazakh constitution after the referendum, and committees are doing procedural lawmaking work. The Law on the First President - Elbasy will expire by the end of this year after a vote at a plenary meeting of the national parliament's Mazhilis," Sairov told Interfax on Wednesday.

Kazakhstan held a referendum on constitutional amendments on June 5 of this year. The amendments were backed by 77.18% of voters, and the turnout was 68.05%.

The Kazakh constitutional amendments took effect on June 8, 2022.

In particular, the amendments abolished constitutional provisions on the rule and privileges of First Kazakh President Nazarbayev, including his right to be elected president for more than two consecutive terms of office, and the provision, which says that the status and rights of the first president are regulated by the constitution and the constitutional law.

The mentions of Nazarbayev as the founder of independent Kazakhstan and the first president of Kazakhstan - Elbasy (the Leader of Nation), as well as his unchangeable status, have also been crossed out.
