Emergency power outages expected in Kiev, several other regions of Ukraine starting Monday morning - Ukrenergo

MOSCOW. Nov 7 (Interfax) - Emergency power outages are expected in Kiev and a number of other regions in Ukraine starting the morning of Monday, November 7, until the end of the day, Ukrainian media have reported with reference to Ukrenergo, the national electricity transmission operator.

"Planned [power supply] restriction schedules will be put into effect starting 6:00 a.m. until the end of the day. In addition, regional grid operators might impose emergency restrictions by applying emergency outage schedules. Such measures are necessary to avoid shortage and prevent an overload of high-voltage infrastructure," it said.

Expecting electricity supply shortages, Ukrenergo's dispatch center provided regional grid operators with volumes for limiting power supply for consumers in the city of Kiev and the Kiev, Chernigov, Cherkassy, Zhitomir, Sumy, Kharkov, and Poltava regions on Tuesday, it said.

"Those are the regions where the grid sustained the most significant damage. To ensure the power system's stable and balanced operation, consumption must be reduced by 30%," it said.

Sergei Kovalenko, CEO of the YASNO power supply company, said power supply shortage that Kiev's power grid is expected to experience on Monday, November 7, will exceed that envisioned by the outage schedule by 32%. "This is a force majeure. Therefore, we'll have to resort to emergency outages. This means that schedules don't work in this case," Ukrainian media cited Kovalenko as saying on his social account.
