Amazon gets its first fines in Russia for not deleting banned info

MOSCOW. Oct 18 (Interfax) - The magistrates court of Moscow's Tagansky District ruled on Tuesday to impose an administrative fine of 1 million rubles on U.S.-based Amazon company for the first time for breaching Russian laws, an Interfax correspondent reported from the courthouse.

"The Amazon company is found responsible for committing an administrative offense and fined one million rubles," the judge said.

Amazon was accused of failing to delete content banned in Russia, namely information on suicide methods.

Later, the magistrates court found Amazon responsible for committing another administrative offense related to failure to delete information banned in Russia, an Interfax correspondent reported.

"The Amazon company is found responsible for committing an administrative offense and fined three million rubles," the judge said.

Amazon was found responsible for failing to delete information "on places and methods of distributing narcotic substances."

These were the first fines imposed on Amazon for breaching Russian laws.
