IAEA head speaks of progress in establishing protection zone around Zaporozhye NPP

BRUSSELS. Oct 14 (Interfax) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Friday that progress has been made in establishing a protection zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

"Moving closer to the establishment of a protection zone for Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant-the plant's situation is untenable and we need immediate action to protect it," Grossi said on social media.

Grossi said that he arrived to Poland after an intensive week of consultations with Russia and Ukraine.

The IAEA director general visited Kiev last week for consultations on creating a protection zone around the Zaporozhye NPP.

He also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Tuesday.

The Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It operates six VVER-1000 power units. The Russian army took control of the nuclear facility on February 28, 2022.
