UNGA adopts resolution condemning referenda in DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye, Kherson regions

NEW YORK, UN. Oct 13 (Interfax) - The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning the decision on the entry of the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into Russia.

The resolution got support from 143 countries, five, namely Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua and Syria, voted against, and a number of countries, including China, Armenia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, South Africa, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, abstained.

The UN General Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, including territorial waters.

The UN General Assembly called on member states and international organizations to support de-escalation of the current situation and peaceful settlement of the conflict through political dialogue, negotiations, mediation and other peaceful means.

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya spoke at the special meeting of the General Assembly and described the resolution as "politicized and openly provocative."

"It has nothing to do with the protection of international law and the UN Charter. By submitting this draft, Western countries seek to achieve their own geopolitical objectives and yet again try to use General Assembly members as extras," Nebenzya said.
