Equipment suppliers for Paks-2 nuclear plant start preparing for production - Rosatom

MOSCOW. Sept 27 (Interfax) - The suppliers of equipment for the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in Hungary have begun preparations to manufacture it, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said after a meeting between its CEO Alexei Likhachev and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto at the IAEA general session in Vienna.

They discussed progress on the Paks-2 project and noted the importance of the project moving to the actual construction stage after receiving the main licenses at the end of August. They also discussed further steps that will make it possible to keep construction of the plant on schedule going forward.

Speaking at the plenary session, Szijjarto reiterated that Hungary has decided to build a new nuclear power plant in order to ensure its energy security and sovereignty. The plant is expected to go into operation in 2030.

The minister said Hungary will not support possible European Union sanctions that would jeopardize the security of its energy supplies and nuclear investments.

There has periodically been talk about imposing sanctions against Russia's nuclear sector, but it has not been included in any sanctions package imposed so far.
