Putin gives Snowden Russian citizenship
MOSCOW. Sept 26 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree, entitled "On admission into and exit from Russian Federation citizenship," which grants citizenship, specifically, to former CIA and NSA employee Edward Snowden.
The decree, published on the official web portal of legal information, contains a list of recipients of Russian citizenship. Among them is "Snowden, Edward Joseph, born June 21, 1983, in the United States of America."
In 2013, Snowden leaked information about U.S. secret services' global surveillance programs to the media. The publications prompted an outcry. In his home country, Snowden faces in absentia charges of espionage and stealing government property. He fled the U.S. first to Hong Kong, then to Russia.
