Tokayev, von der Leyen discuss EU-Kazakhstan strategic partnership, including energy

ASTANA. Sept 20 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the prospects of a broader strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the European Union, the Kazakh leader's press service stated on Tuesday.

"Special attention was given to progress in the implementation of the agreements reached during the formal visit by the president of Kazakhstan to Brussels in November 2021. In particular, [the pair] touched on issues of implementing joint energy and transport-logistics projects," the statement said.

The head of state informed the EC president of the current large-scale political and economic reforms in his country.

"The leaders reaffirmed their mutual intention further to strengthen strategic partnership comprehensively," the statement said.

At the close of the meeting, Tokayev invited von der Leyen to pay a formal visit to Kazakhstan, the press service said.
