Iran takes another step towards full membership in SCO

SAMARKAND. Sept 15 (Interfax) - Iran has signed a memorandum of obligations in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), thus opening the way to its full membership in the organization, Uzbek Foreign Ministry spokesman Yusup Kabulzhanov told Interfax.

"A memorandum of Iranian obligations in the SCO was signed today. This opens the country's way to full membership in the SCO," Kabulzhanov said.

SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian signed the document, he said.

This is a very important day for Iran and the SCO, Zhang told reporters. "The Iranian entry into the group of member states will strengthen the Shanghai Cooperation Organization," he said.

The procedure for Iranian admission into the SCO was initiated at the SCO summit in September 2021.
