Putin extends condolences to King Charles III over demise of Elizabeth II

MOSCOW. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended condolences to King Charles III over the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, a statement published on the Kremlin official Telegram channel on Thursday night said.

"The name of Her Majesty is uninterruptedly linked to the most important events of the newest history of the United Kingdom. For many decades Elizabeth II rightly enjoyed love and respect of her nation, as well as the authority on the international arena," the statement says.

"I wish you courage and fortitude in the face of this grave and irreparable loss. I ask you to pass the words of sincere sympathy and support to the royal family members and the whole nation of Great Britain," it said.

Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland earlier on Thursday. Her body will be now taken to St. Giles' Cathedrall in Edinburgh, and later to Buckingham Palace. Five days after, the coffin will be moved to Westminster Hall.

It is reported that the queen's funeral is expected to take place at Westminster Abbey 10 days after her demise.

The eldest son of Elizabeth II, prince Charles of Wales, 73, immediately becomes the United Kingdom's new king.
