EU refuses to recognize Russian passports issued in Russian-controlled territories of Ukraine - Borrell

BRUSSELS. Aug 31 (Interfax) - The European Union's planned visa restrictions for Russian citizens will include the non-recognition of passports issued in the Russian-controlled territories of Ukraine, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said.

"We agreed that passports issued by the Russian authorities in [...] territories of Ukraine [under Russia's control] will not be recognized," Borrell said at a press conference following an informal meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Prague on Wednesday.

Borrell listed a number of positions that the foreign ministers of the EU countries agreed upon in order to restrict Russian citizens' entry to the EU countries.

At the same time, the EU diplomacy chief noted that the council had reached a "political agreement," while a legal decision should follow.
