Lithuanian FM proposes that EU consider peacekeepers deployment to Zaporizhzhya NPP

VILNIUS. Aug 31 (Interfax/BNS) - Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has proposed that the European Union have another discussion of the possible deployment of a military peacekeeping mission to protect the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.

"We have never been so close to a nuclear catastrophe before. Just regretting the situation may not be enough," Landsbergis told reporters in Prague where he came to attend an informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers.

"We should resume the discussion that we had about six months ago, the one about a possible [establishment of] military peacekeeping force to ensure the nuclear security at and around the Zaporizhzhya NPP," Landsbergis said.

Russian forces took control of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, at the beginning of March.
