Regulator renews all radioactive waste treatment licenses of Chernobyl NPP

MOSCOW. Aug 22 (Interfax) - The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) renewed every suspended radioactive waste treatment license of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant at the meetings held on August 10 and 17.

"This means the Chernobyl NPP is now able to fully resume radioactive waste treatment," the Ukrainian media reported with the reference to the plant website.

The state-run enterprise noted that the regulator suspended the licenses in late April 2022, thus paralyzing the decommissioning of reactor units No. 1-3, operations at radioactive waste treatment facilities, and certain operations related to atomic energy use.

"Seeking to renew the licenses, the Chernobyl NPP did a lot to prove its ability to comply with the license terms, the compliance of its organizational structure, and the availability of skilled personnel, material and other resources that comply with the nuclear and radiation safety norms and regulations in the necessary amount," the statement said.

The SNRIU suspended the licenses required for decommissioning Chernobyl NPP reactor units No. 1-3, as well as storage and processing of radioactive waste from a number of plants and installations, and the use of sources of ionizing radiation at the end of April.
