U.S. to give WFP $68 mln to buy Ukrainian wheat to help ease global food crisis - Blinken

MOSCOW. Aug 17 (Interfax) - The United States will provide $68 million to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to purchase wheat from Ukraine and to subsequently deliver it to countries which are most vulnerable in terms of food security, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.

"The United States will contribute $68 million to the World Food Program to buy Ukrainian wheat to address the world's pressing food crisis. We're committed to supporting global food security for the most vulnerable and call on all countries to follow suit," Ukrainian media outlets quoted Blinken as saying on social media on Wednesday.

As reported, the Ukrainian government on July 28 approved a draft agreement with the WFP to reopen its office in Ukraine, a step that will also allow the organization to buy agricultural products from Ukrainian companies as part of international humanitarian programs.

The WFP will take part in purchases of agricultural products and foodstuffs from Ukrainian companies for the needs of UN-led international humanitarian projects.
