U.S. announces imposition of visa restrictions on 100 Belarusian officials - State Dept

WASHINGTON. Aug 9 (Interfax) - The United States has imposed restrictions on 100 Belarusian officials for "involvement in undermining democratic institutions," in Belarus, the Department of State announced on Tuesday.

"Today we are announcing steps to impose visa restrictions on 100 regime officials and their affiliates for their involvement in undermining or injuring democratic institutions or impeding the transition to democracy in Belarus," the Department's website stated.

Among those affected are people holding high office in the administration of the Belarusian president, in the Interior Ministry, the KGB State Security Committee, the Central Election Commission of Belarus, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Central Office of the Investigative Committee, the national broadcaster Belteleradiocompany, units of the Air Force and Air Defence Forces, the Department said.

In addition, the restrictions are being imposed on members of the Belarusian parliament, circuit judges, security officers and other officials.
