Russia not to extend ban on sugar exports to EAEU after Aug 31 - EEC

MOSCOW. July 15 (Interfax) - Russia will not extend the ban on exporting sugar to the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) after August 31, 2022, and sugar sales on the internal market of member states will be the trade priority within the EAEU, the trade bloc of the European Economic Commission (EEC) told journalists.

The EEC Council has instructed the competent authorities of the EAEU to carry out work to negotiate contracts for the supply of sugar within the framework of mutual trade in order to meet current domestic demand. "At the same time, the parties should proceed from the priority of sugar sales on the internal market of member states and also from the fact that the restrictions on such supplies in effect in the Russian Federation until August 31, 2022 will not be extended," a representative of the trade bloc said.

"Following consultations at the EEC, guarantees have been given concerning the possibility of concluding contracts and supplies of necessary volumes of sugar after September 1," EEC Trade Minister Andrei Slepnev was quoted as saying.

The Russian and Kazakh agriculture ministries have come to an agreement on Russia delivering 168,000 tonnes of sugar to Kazakhstan before the end of the year.
