Sandu, Merkel discuss Moldova's EU integration

CHISINAU. June 20 (Interfax) - Moldova's President Maia Sandu on Monday discussed the country's European integration with former German chancellor Angela Merkel.

During a telephone conversation the pair "discussed Moldova's European path in the context of the upcoming European Council meeting to decide the matter of granting EU candidate status to Moldova," the president's press service told Interfax.

Sandu and Merkel discussed the reforms Moldova is to implement in the areas of the rule of law, anti-corruption, and public administration in order to advance on the path to the EU.

Sandu thanked Germany for support, including while Merkel was in office (2005-2021)

On June 17, the European Commission published its conclusions on the membership applications filed by Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, recommending granting candidate status to the former two. On June 23-24, the EU Council is to make a final decision on Moldova and Ukraine's EU candidate status.
