Cuba plans to begin accepting Mir plastic cards before end of 2022

MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - Cuba is planning to begin accepting the plastic cards of the Mir payment system before the end of this year, Alberto Quinones Betancourt, Director General of Informatics Services of the Central Bank of Cuba said when speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2022.

"We are working at this moment to ensure the acceptance of cards issued within the Mir payment system in our country, and we are hoping that we will take final steps within the next few days or weeks, and the Mir payment system will be fully accommodated in our country before the end of this year," Betancourt said.

The National Payment Card System (NSPK, the operator of the Mir payment system) is looking at the possibility to launch the Mir card in Cuba, the company's CEO Vladimir Komlev said in late March.

Mir cards are currently accepted in ten countries: Turkey, Vietnam, Armenia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
