Russian Justice Ministry designates Committee Against Torture as unregistered foreign agent NGO

MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax) - The Russian Justice Ministry has designated the human rights group Committee Against Torture as an unregistered foreign agent nongovernmental organization.

The ministry updated its foreign agent register on Friday evening.

The Committee's objectives include "representing a claimant's interests in investigative bodies and in court; providing assistance in receiving compensation, and if necessary, in arranging rehabilitative medical support," the ministry said.

The organization's financing sources include the Committee Against Torture charity fund for assistance to victims of official crimes.

The Committee Against Torture website says the Justice Ministry had designated the organization as a foreign agent NGO in 2015 and in 2016.

"At present, the organization is working under its historical name Committee Against Torture without legal entity status," it said.
