Ukraine and Poland to boost throughput capacity of Krakovets-Korczowa border crossing

MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax) - Ukraine and Poland reached an agreement as part of the Open Border project to enhance the throughput capacity of the Krakovets-Korczowa crossing on their border by at least 50% over the next few weeks.

In particular, this result may be achieved by increasing the number of truck lanes and setting up more pavilions for customs and passport control, Ukrainian media outlets quoted Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry as saying on social media.

The aforementioned agreements were reached at intergovernmental consultations, which took place at the Krakovets-Korczowa crossing.

"We hope that the increase of the throughput capacity of the Krakovets-Korczowa crossing will help reduce the burden on other crossing points on the Polish-Ukrainian border," the Ukrainian media quoted Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov as saying.

This work will be launched on both sides of the border as soon as today, and new pavilions will be built at the border crossings within the next few weeks.

Under these agreements, Poland will build infrastructure, which will make it possible to increase the number of truck lanes to 11, will provide Ukrainian border guards with a container module to set up and launch a new crossing point, while both Poland and Ukraine will provide the required number of border guards and customs personnel.

The sides plan to build new crossing points on Ukraine's western border and to upgrade existing ones as part of the Open Border project.

The Ukrainian government earlier in June formed the Open Border working group in charge of developing border crossings, and appointed Infrastructure Minister Kubrakov to head it. This new format will help promptly tackle all problems on the Ukrainian-Polish border and draw up a common step-by-step plan to improve the operation of border crossings.
