Kazakhstan updates military strategy

NUR-SULTAN. June 10 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan has drawn up a new edition of its military strategy against the backdrop of new threats deriving from intensified rivalry of global powers for spheres of influence.

"The global military-political situation is highly dynamic and unpredictable, and the rivalry of global and regional powers for spheres of influence on the world stage is growing, alongside the increasing role of military force in the resolution of interstate and domestic disagreements," the draft, published on Friday for public discussion to be held until June 24, said.

"Prognosis of the global military-political situation's development in the medium term reveals trends towards an escalation of tensions and expansion of the hotbeds of instability as certain countries are seeking to change the existent world order. Political, social, economic, territorial, ethnic and other disagreements inside regions and states might be used to achieve military-political and military-strategic objectives," it said.

According to the strategy, the main military threats to Kazakhstan include a depleting efficiency of international law and capacities of international security organizations to prevent and put an end to the use of military force in interstate relations, alongside growing tensions between world powers seeking to expand their economic and political influence at the global and regional levels.

Other circumstances that might create military threats to Kazakhstan are "propaganda and information activity, such as information operations (cyberattacks) aimed at destabilizing the domestic situation and creating a negative setting on the world stage," it said.

"The experience of the latest military and armed conflicts shows that domestic destabilization and a military conflict are possible without foreign military intervention," an explanatory note to the strategy said.

Other new threats include secret training of destructive elements inside Kazakhstan and in neighboring countries, tighter rivalry for superiority in outer space, and "the border situation affecting border security" in the context of the military-political situation in the adjoining territory.
