German FM speaks in support of admitting Ukraine to EU
BERLIN. June 2 (Interfax) - German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has made it clear that, in her view, Ukraine should be granted European Union candidate country status, and the European Commission could make such a proposal in consultations with the member states.
"It's not enough just to say: you're part of Europe. It's necessary to say: you're part of the EU," Baerbock said at the WDR television and radio company's Europaforum on Thursday.
She warned, however, that Ukraine cannot be granted easier than standard procedures in joining the EU.
"There can be no easy path. But at this moment, we all as the European Union should speak up to make sure the door is not closed on" Ukraine, she said.
Germany should support Ukraine at this "historic moment," she said.
